Off Topic

Hey everybody!

I am in Mumbai right now. It's really hot, but I'm loving it. Lots of family, food, and fun! I start my job with CRY (Child Rights & You) on Wednesday. Really looking forward to it. Hope all of you are having an enjoyable summer as well.

i think that "life on the edge" would be a cool theme if we angle it more towards how we take advantage of our location. like for lowerschoolers living on the edge means that they can take trips to ben and jerry's on free cone day, and for people who are taking advanced courses outside of usn, living on the edge enables them to take classes at vanderbilt. for comunity service club, they take advantage of being so close to places like the edgehill daycare facility. so i think it works on the literal level. but metaphorically, do we actually live on the edge? i don't see it tying in that way.

Here's my latest 2 cents ...

OK one more and then I'm going to stop because we really do need to choose.

Has anybody seen all the hype for the new TV series called The Starter Wife? (the expression "starter" is frequently used in real estate to describe a great first house - a "starter" house. I started thinking that USN as a K-12 could be considered your "starter" life. And, that an interesting theme could be expanded on The Starter Life. Could be too tied to pop culture.

Here's my pick-3 so far ...

Crossroads (although I'm not sure about the title-what about something like "Life on Edge (refering to Edgehill)"???) - incorporating a google earth satellite photo on the cover. The graphic device could be a sideways "T" - not the actual letter but the way. We could also use the plus sign and possibly other equation signs.

Just a little bit of history repeating (of course it could be that we should save this for an anniversary edition... is this an anniversary year? When was PDS established???)

As for the third... I think it is The Starter Life with perhaps a game board feel. Maybe a take off onthe Game of Life. With different squares along the way that are USN themed. This could be a lot of fun and I can't remember a game themed book.

One more idea to consider...

This idea is originally Mrs. Tanner's...Crossroads. We are at the crossroad of Edgehill, 21st, 19th, and Grand Avenues. As the link below defines it, we are "a small community located at such a crossroads."

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=crossroads

Also, we are taking on new things like Chinese. The East + West theme posted earlier (focussing on the East and West wings of our school and their diversity and community) could also be incorporated. The urban + suburban theme (USN + River Campus) also plays in. Finally, we also have our own street signs in the hallways. We could focus on the convergence at this crossroad.

claire's top three

my favorites were the something unwinding itself and the enjoy the ride (or whatever it was called - i forgot) from brooke. history repeating itself would be cool but i'm not sure how much we could design around it, you know? but anyway, those are my top picks!

Yet another idea ...

This link was sent to me via the JEA listserv. It regards a particular font.

This idea would revolve around the word "typeface". That's what our yearbook is made up of type and faces. How does this hit you. Any ideas for spinning it out to the sections?

Let's start narrowing down

WOW - we've got some great ideas going here. It's time to start narrowing them down. Re-read all of the posts and pick your top three. Before you select be sure to consider how the ideas relate to the coming year and how they will play out on the cover and the five section dividers: PEOPLE, STUDENT LIFE, SPORTS, ARTS & ORGANIZATIONS, ADS & INDEX.

just hit me...

Hey, it's Kelsey.
A theme hit me while reading Brooke's post, the part about music and sound. I hope this isn't corny.
The halls are alive...with the sound of music.
"The Halls are Alive..." could be on the cover, and on the opening spread it could say "with the sound of music"

some stuff i have been thinking about

-something with hands in the community i thought it would be cool with differnt people's hand prints thoughout the book
-enjoy the ride....like enjoy this crazy journey through usn...this could have theme park feel or street signs and a more driving through the city feel...like our new hallway street signs
-push play:'08...something with sound and records, each grade has its own sound and differnt kinds of music that influenced them...and you can go through time like from records to tapes to cds to now ipods, or differnt types of music...also with the records/cds and '08 there could be a circles and rounded edges as an element
-something like strands being unravelled...like the bigger picture being stripped into each individual strand...its holds it together...like a cloth being being unravelled and each strand is seperate and important in making the whole picture, like each student making the entire class/school of usn
-three words where the u,s and n are in squares and they stand out some cool words: unique, about, ultimate, underneath, sound, now, altitude, stripped, sample, unscrew, new

Greetings from Siffat in India

Following is taken from an email received Tuesday morning from Siffat:

I just arrived in Mumbai on Monday night. Before flying out of the US, I
visited a couple of colleges over the weekend. But I am now settled in and
ready to begin work. I have read over our blog and all your emails and also
posted a new entry. I really like the ideas of Double Exposure and the
Chinese calendar. Unfortunately, next year's seniors were born in the year
of the snake or the horse - had it been the tiger, we could have related it
more to USN. Nevertheless, the idea of the Wii - WE (with usage of other
pronouns) sounds really good too.

This is from an email that Brooke sent me last week in response to the theme idea "just a little bit of history repeating itself"."as far as themes my friends from jefferson city ,who got honorable mention for their yearbook, theme is unbreakable bonds because of that grades impact and how the school has stayed with its roots despite new additons and changes. I thought this is a really cool idea because our school has gone through similar changes but we still identify with things from thepast like PDS. Anyway just and idea kind of the same main idea as ms.tanners (i really like that idea i guess because i have been at USN so long and i have a lot of history here and i like that even though each year the seniors leave their mark, some things stay the same and are preserved.)

This is where we begin...

So here we go!
Following you will find the beginnings of our theme brainstorm. See what you think! Included are ideas from talking to you to other yearbook sites, as well as from media trends to a few original ideas. Don't hesitate to post more ideas. We need to put it all out there and then narrow the ideas down to three favorites that we play out through the book - from section dividers to graphic elements. The seniors will have the final word on what we wind up with, but everyone should take part. With the conference coming up on June 11-12, we have to narrow our choices in the next week. I'll try to check in a couple of times a day to see how the ideas are coming along.

Faves (T-mobile My Faves, Fave 5)

A little bit of history repeating itself

Think. Just think. Think about it for a minute.

24 (clock theme)

Lost/Found

usn unplugged
diary

USNcast or schoolcast or daycast, hmmm (play on podcast)

the + sign is big (something + something)
work + play (you + me, creative + interest, blue + maroon)
action + reaction
you + me
history + repeating

Meaningful additions (what will USN add next?)

google this (when I googled USN there 1,490,000 results in .11 seconds)
(google theme could include a satellite image from google earth)

On the edge (play off of location – Edgehill Avenue, theme would revolve around things that are on the edge of happening)

text this (play on texting)

EAST + WEST (East meets West play on East wing to West wing of school could focus on diversity and community) or perhaps YEAR OF THE TIGER. We are adding Chinese to our curriculum. Could do an asian theme with year of the whatever year it is.

Proof positive (could use + sign.)

Movie theme – lights, camera, action

Mastercard theme

Play on Wii – theme could be WE sections could be other pronouns, I, YOU, HE, SHE, THEY, US

Upgrading

Access Granted

Testing our limits

Double Exposure (not sure how this plays out, but we could have double exposures on all pages. Could be that we are urban + suburban i.e. USN + River Campus) Following are instructions that I found for creating a double exposure.

1. Make sure you have your 2 photographs ready in a digital formatsuitable for Photoshop (PSD, JPG, TIF, etc.)
2. Open both photographs at the same time in Photoshop.
3. Decide which photograph will be your background and which will beyour foreground.
4, Using the move tool, drag your "foreground picture" on top of your"background picture" and drop it. It will become a layer on top ofyour "background picture."
5. Using the move tool, adjust your top layer until it is on top ofyour bottom layer exactly the way you want it.
6. In your layer window, be sure "Layer 1" is selected.
7. In the top right hand corner of the layer window there is a featurecalled "Opacity." Click on the arrow beside 100%. This will reveal aslider that will allow you to make the foreground layer opaque.
8. Adjust the opacity for the desired effect.
